Red Sox get first series win of the season against the Yankees

The Boston Red Sox have claimed their first series win of the season against rivals the New York Yankees 2-1 on wins. The Red Sox were 0-6 before their first home series against the Yankees but will be boosted by their 2 victories.

Boston got off to a good start, winning game 1 but were out-fired in game two as the Yankees scored two homers and 2 singles to win 9-4 and tie the series.

Russel Martin scored a great 3 run homer which was one of the Yankees’ 18 home runs already this season. The Yankees have scored home runs in 7 of their 8 games.

In game three, however, the Red Sox shut the Yankees out to win the game and claim their first series win of the season, bringing their tally to 2-7.

Josh Beckett’s pitching was very strong as he struck out 10 Yankees in 8 innings, keeping them scoreless as the Red Sox won the game 4-0.

The Yankees and the Red Sox meet again on May 5 at Yankee Stadium.

Will the Yankees be surpassed by the Red Sox in 2011?

(This article was written on opening day)

Talk lately has been highly positive surrounding the 2011 Red Sox. It seems almost everyone thinks that the Boston Red Sox will finish atop their rivals the New York Yankees in the American League East. Even the New York Times!

I have to disagree here as I think that the Yankees will win the division. Its too early to gather how well they might do in the 2011 post season but I think their season will be stronger then expected.

Boston created big expectations around this year’s squad when they signed Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford, slotting themselves into the favorites position for the AL East. Talk is that the Red Sox have established a new “pecking order” in the AL East. I think we’ve seen this kind of thing before: Football fans will remember incredible hype surrounding the signing of soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo for Real Madrid- but to no avail- Real Madrid have not beat their rivals Barcelona since then.

Will we see something similar this year with Boston? Or will the “new” Red Sox gel together well and live up to the expectations?

The math looks good for Boston. Afterall, 04 + 07 = 11, right?

Despite all this, the Yankees still have Teixeira and A-Rod- the MLB’s biggest 1-2 combo. But there is someone else who may be the vital cog in the Yankees machine that either makes or breaks the team this year.

Burnett: Key Yankee in 2011

AJ Burnett will be looking to have a “bounce back” season this year and perhaps return to the form he showed in 2009, when the Yankees won the World Series.

Baseball Blogs thinks that if Burnett has a good season. all will be good for the Yankees this season.

Official prediction: Yankees to top American League East in 2011

Red Sox are 0-3, first time since 1996

In 1996 the Boston Red Sox started the season with 5 straight loses. In 2011 they are on track to beat that record after getting swept by the Texas Rangers.

Boston started the season with massive expectation garnered from their off season signings. If Boston had their head the skies however, this sweep from Texas will have put their feet firmly on the ground.

“I think everybody’s a little bit shocked,’’ Clay Buchholz said.

The Sox can be forgiven for beating a strong Texas Rangers who scored 11 home runs throughout the series and won in a total 3-game score of 26-11. Boston will receive a chance to redeem themselves as they fly off to Cleveland for a 3 game series against the Indians.

Yankees off to a strong start on opening day

The New York Yankees have defeated the Detroit Tigers in the Major League Baseball opener for 2011 at Yankee Stadium.

Detroit scored first but were blown away in the botton of the third by a very nice 3 run homer from Mark Teixeira.

The Yankees would go on to win 6-3, getting off to a winning start to the season.

Meanwhile in Texas, the Rangers also got off to a winning start, defeating the Boston Red Sox. The Rangers were last year’s American League Champions and looked strong as they secured a 9-5 victory. David Murphy scored a 2 run in the 8th which proved to be the deciding moment of the game.

The Red Sox also looked strong however. New signing Carl Crawford will be looking to improve in the next game as he went 0 for 4, being struck out 3 times, leaving runners on third with each bat.

If the Red Sox come out stronger in the next game it could turn into an interesting and close battle.

Over in Kansas City, the Royals got a late 393 ft home run to beat the LA Dodgers 2-1.

Mike Hampton Retires

Mike Hampton, veteran pitcher who signed for no less then 7 MLB teams, has retired. Hampton, 38,  has been well known for his injuries and has finally succumb, letting his team mates know on Saturday that he has decided to retire.

“In fairness to them and fairness to myself I’m just done. It’s not a decision that’s easy to make,” he said.

Hampton started his career with the Seattle Mariners in 1993, finding himself traded to the Houston Astros at the conclusion of the season. Hampton had a great season with the New York Mets in 2000, earning himself an MVP in the 2000 NCLS.

In December 2000, the Colorado Rockies signed Hampton for what was at the time the biggest sporting contract in sports history.

Hampton was also an All Star player in 1999 and 2001.

Perth Heat are the Australian Baseball League 2011 Champions

The Perth Heat have claimed the Claxton Shield against the Adelaide Bite and become the champions in front of their home crowd in the 2011 Australian Baseball League.

The Heat were under considerable pressure after losing the first game in the series to the Adelaide Bite, however they bounced back brilliantly by winning the following the two games and taking out the series.

The game was a tense 0-0 battle until the bottom of the Fifth, when Perth scored 3 runs and never looked back. Adelaide would manage to pull a solitary run back in the top of the 9th as Perth ran home for a 7-1 victory.

Run to the final

Perth landed on top of the ABL Ladder at the end of the season and had a great run through the post season, defeating Sydney in a sweep and earning them a place in the final.

Adelaide defeated the Melbourne Aces in a sweep and played off against Sydney for the second place in the final. Despite winning the opening game by a massive margin, the Bite went on to defeat the Blue Sox 2-1 in the series and earn a ticket to Perth to battle for the title.

The Perth Heat’s post season had it’s first hitch in the road when Adelaide took out the opening game, but the Heat showed real character by coming back and taking out the series.

Adelaide win first game of the Championship Series against Perth

The Adelaide Bite have pulled off a fantastic game 1 win against the Perth Heat in the Australian Baseball League deciding series.

The Perth Heat, playing at home, got off to a great start, scoring in the first inning. Adelaide bounced back though in the top of third, leveling the scores at 1-1. At the top of the 5th Adelaide scored 3 runs, putting themselves far into the lead.

The Perth Heat, however, who finished on top of the Australian Baseball League ladder, weren’t going to give up game 1 without a fight.  In the bottom of the 6th they pulled 2 runs back, making the score 4-3.

The rest of the game was a fairly tense encounter, with the Adelaide Bite eventually holding out win the game 4-3. The win is a massive result for Adelaide who now only need 1 more win to claim victory and bring the Claxton shield back home.

Tomorrow will likely best their best chance to finish the Heat off as they will be the “Home” team (despite the game being played in Perth) so they will have a slight advantage that they didn’t have tonight.

Adelaide will know from experience however that a first result doesn’t mean everything. In their previous series to get into the position they are today, Adelaide lose the opening game 8-0 before going on to win the following two games- Ending the Sydney Blue Sox’s dream of lifting the Claxton Shield.

Will the Heat be able to turn things around? Find out tomorrow as the teams face off in in Game two, which is a potentially deciding game.

Prediction: Perth to recover and take the series 2-1

Australian Baseball League final to be shown on Fox Sports

The New Australian Baseball League has reached a climax as The Adelaide Bite and the Perth Heat get ready to duel it out in Perth in the Championship Series.

All games of the possible 3 will be shown live on Fox Sports, which marks a great moment for the Australian Baseball League as they are the first games which will appear live in Australian TV.

The Final is set to be a tightly contested games against two side who are in good form. Perth breezed into the final defeating Sydney in a Semi-Finals sweep. Adelaide ended the Melbourne Ace’s dream of the Claxton Shield in a sweep also, which sent them to Sydney for a do or die clash, with the winner heading to the final in Perth.

Sydney came out strong in the series opener and crunched the Bite 8-0. In a great show of character though the Bite came back and won the next two games in the series, including an incredible 15-inning deciding match.

So the stage is set for the currently two strongest teams in the league.

If you do not have Fox Sports we will be showing the game live here on Baseball Blogs, considering that the Bite or the Heat go ahead with their usual streams (This is looking a little more unlikely now that the Final will be shown on TV)

Tip for the final: Perth Heat to use the home advantage well and take out the series 2-1.

17 year old New Zealander Joins the Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox have signed Te Wera Bishop,  a 17 year old softball player from New Zealand, according to media reports down under. According to Red Sox staff, the young player made an impression and they believe that with the help of the Sox coaches, they will be able to assist him in the transition from Softball to Baseball.

Te Wera Bishop

The signing could be one of a few to come from the region, as the New Australian Baseball League reaches the conclusion of it’s inaugural season. The league has given a platform for players in the country and surrounding areas to play at a higher level and showcase their skills. The Boston Red Sox already have two Australian prospects in their ranks.

Bishop will head to Fort Meyers to train next month.
